On Monday, August 19, 2024 at 2:26 PM EDT (6:26pm UTC) the Moon will be Full! This Moon is widely called the Super Blue Moon, but it is also known as the Sturgeon Moon, Red Moon, Corn Moon, Green Corn Moon, Barley Moon, Herb Moon, and Grain Moon.
It won’t actually look blue, but instead it’s considered a Blue Moon as it’s the 3rd Full moon in a season with 4 full Moons. Also of interest is that it’s the first Super Moon of four consecutive super Moons.
The term “Super Moon” has come to be known as a full Moon that occurs when the Moon is within 90% of it’s closest approach to Earth. During it’s closest approach to Earth it appears bigger to observers, especially when it rises opposite of the sunset. The Moon’s closest approach is 226,000 miles (363,300 km). Tomorrow when the full Moon occurs, it will be 228,801.17 miles (368,219.80 km) away. from Earth.
The next full Moon will be September 17, at 22:34 EDT ( Sept 18, at 02:34 UTC).
I’ll be streaming after 9:00 PM EDT as I do every night, but if I can I’ll add a view of the Moon through my telescope! Watch the stream, or replay below!
